The last in a series of five articles with specific special needs resources

As LD Awareness Month concludes during this last week of October, we are bringing you our final article in a series of five that provides websites and resources for specific special or additional needs.

The most recent data from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) indicates that in the U.S., about 1 in 88 children have been identified with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Autism spectrum disorders are almost five times more common among boys than girls – with 1 in 54 boys identified.

Apps for Autism & Asperger’s-2013

Over the past several weeks, we have been receiving more requests than usual for new apps to help children and adults on the autism spectrum. So, we thought that this week’s article might be a good vehicle for providing our readers with an answer to these many requests. What is new in the world of apps for autism/Asperger’s?

We hope you will find a few new resources here to tap into for yourself or for the person in your life challenged with an autism-spectrum disorder. New Apps for Autism/Asperger’s

Autism Apps for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad---FREE (Updated: Jan 10, 2013) ---Educational Autism Apps is simply a comprehensive list of apps that are being used with and by people diagnosed with autism, Down syndrome and other special needs. It also includes links to any available information that can be found for each app. The Apps are also separated into over 30 categories, and the descriptions are all searchable, so any type of app is easy to find and download.

MySocius Model (Released: Nov 13, 2012) by BehaviorApp --- MySocius is an iPhone and iPad app designed for parents who want to help their child with autism communicate. This app uses evidence based, Naturalistic Teaching Procedures that “embeds teaching within the activities of everyday life.” Naturalistic Teaching Procedures have proved to be effective in clinical practice. Price: $24.99 (Expensive, but for what it claims to provide, this may be worth the price.)

A Dozen for Autism--A Book List for the Spectrum

The most recent statistics regarding the prevalence of ASDs (autism spectrum disorders) in the U.S. and abroad that were published this past March are more than sobering.

Here are just some of the statistics reported (Data to 2008 provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—March 29, 2012):

• About 1 in 88 children has been identified with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) according to estimates from CDC's Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network.

• ASDs are reported to occur in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups.

• ASDs are almost 5 times more common among boys (1 in 54) than among girls (1 in 252).

Gifted? Special Needs? Both? --- How to Help Your Child

Do you have one child who struggles to learn while your other child learns almost any concept as if it were “a piece of cake”? Perhaps you have a student who is very bright but at the same time is challenged with some aspect(s) of learning. What can a parent or teacher do?

Although my students have always known me as “Mrs. Brennan”, many adults have begun to call me “The Link Lady”. Yes, many parents and teachers email or phone me requesting resources to help their children and students learn with more success. Many of these children/students have special needs and are challenged with physical and/or developmental differences. Others are frustrated and struggle for a different reason--- because learning is not challenging enough for them!

Need Apps for Special Needs? Great!

The holiday season is winding down, and the new year is about to begin. The presents have been put away, returned, or exchanged. However, if you were fortunate enough to receive an iPad or the like for Christmas, have you begun to take full advantage of it? Are you needing more information and resources to make that happen? Let's see if we can help you here.

First of all, we have been receiving quite a number of calls from parents and teachers telling us that they are using our Reading Focus Cards with their new iPads and Kindles. Of course, we are recommending a protective film for the tech devices' screens with this application.

Secondly, if you are a parent or a teacher of a child with special needs, you are in luck today. I have been busy this past week researching the BEST apps for your new tech devices---specifically, apps for children and teens with special needs.

Look Who's Helping Our Struggling Readers!

The last few weeks have been most interesting since an article about the Reading Focus Cards (Patent 7,565,759) first appeared in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch---http://www.stltoday.com/lifestyles/home-and-garden/home/article_1bea7419-12fb-54e0-ba1a-7c542dc87a08.html (from 9/25/11).

Since September 25, I have received many phone calls and online communications from parents, grandparents, teachers, and tutors. What struck me, however, was the very motivated and enthusiastic grandparents who called to discuss their grandchildren's reading challenges. It was most interesting, yet sad, to hear the stories of struggling children from almost every age group and how they have so much difficulty with reading the written word. In addition to the Reading Focus Card orders received, it was my pleasure to listen, answer questions, and offer information, strategies, and professional referrals to enable the grandparents and others to help their challenged readers.

To all who called or visited www.FocusandRead.com, thank you for your interest and dedication to a child's reading issues and long-term academic success. Thank you, also, for wanting to DO something to help a child experiencing reading difficulties. Sensory Issues? Reading Focus Cards to the Rescue!

You are the advocate and mediator for your child when interacting with his healthcare professionals, his teachers and school. At home, you are the one who provides the security of structure and comfort through therapeutic activities or the use of soothing, sensory experiences. You need support. Support that helps with the security and sensory needs of your child can mean the difference between a peaceful day --- and one that is not.

Autism's Awesome A-List!
